Alhaj GK Gaus: A Life of Service, Resilience, and Leadership
Alhaj Golam Kibria Gaus, widely known as GK Gaus, is a transformative figure in Bangladeshi politics, embodying the spirit of grassroots leadership and unwavering commitment to democratic values. From the vibrant fields of student activism in the 1990s to his current role as a senior national strategist for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), his journey is a testament to his dedication to the people of Habiganj and the nation.
The Early Years and Student Leadership
The foundations of GK Gaus’s leadership were laid during his time as a student. Emerging as a fearless voice in the Jatiotabadi Chatra Dal (JCD), he rose to become the President of Habiganj District Chatra Dal. During the historic anti-autocracy movement of 1990, he was at the forefront of the struggle to restore democracy, proving early on that he was a leader willing to sacrifice for the rights of the citizens.
A Legacy of Governance: The People’s Mayor
GK Gaus’s most visible impact came during his remarkable tenure as the Mayor of Habiganj Municipality. Elected to three terms (2004–2024), he redefined local governance in the region. Under his leadership, Habiganj saw a period of unprecedented modernization, including the development of advanced drainage systems, paved road networks, and transparent public services. Even while facing political imprisonment, his popularity remained so immense that he was re-elected by the people of Habiganj from behind bars—a rare feat in the country’s political history.
National Role and Political Resilience
Beyond local governance, GK Gaus has ascended to the highest levels of national politics. As the Central Organizing Secretary (Sylhet Division) of the BNP and the President of Habiganj District BNP, he has become a key architect of the party's organizational strength. His political life has been defined by extreme resilience; he has faced over a hundred political cases and years of struggle, yet his loyalty to the "Sheaf of Paddy" (Dhaner Shish) and the vision of a democratic Bangladesh has never wavered.
Vision 2026: The Path Forward for Habiganj-3
As the BNP-nominated candidate for the Habiganj-3 (Sadar-Lakhai-Sayestaganj) constituency in the 2026 National Parliament Election, Alhaj GK Gaus is focused on a new era of development. His vision is built on the pillars of Good Governance, Public Rights, and the implementation of the BNP’s national reform agenda. He is dedicated to bringing the benefits of the 'Family Card' and 'Farmer Card' to every household, ensuring that the people of Habiganj finally receive their fair share of national progress and a corruption-free society.

A Legacy of Sacrifice: For the People and the Party
Alhaj GK Gaus’s journey is not just one of leadership, but of profound personal sacrifice. Since the late 1980s, he has stood at the frontlines of democracy, but the last 17 years of fascist rule marked his most difficult trial.
Giving Up Power for the People: In 2018, when the party called upon him to represent the "Dhaner Shish" (Sheaf of Paddy) in the National Election, GK Gaus did not hesitate. He sacrificed his position as the elected Mayor of Habiganj—a role he held with honor for 14 years—to stand as the BNP’s candidate for MP, choosing the party's mandate over his own administrative chair.
A Targeted Life: His defiance came at a near-fatal cost. While imprisoned for his political stance, he faced a brutal assassination attempt inside Habiganj Jail in July 2015. He was attacked with a sharp weapon (spear/rod) and left seriously injured, requiring urgent transfer to Dhaka for treatment. Even behind bars, his life was on the line, yet his spirit remained unbroken.
17 Years of Persecution: Throughout nearly two decades of oppression, he endured over 100 politically motivated cases and repeated imprisonments. While his family faced constant surveillance and hardship, GK Gaus remained a "Symbol of Resilience," refusing to compromise his loyalty to the BNP or his dedication to the people of Habiganj-3.
